SELECTION OF UNIVERSITIES

SELECTION OF UNIVERSITIES

IndiaEduTech- OVERSEAS STUDY DIVISION provides free counselling to students on one to one basis. For many people, studying abroad is an experience like no other. Not only is it one of the few times in a busy academic life that students can have such a different kind of adventure, but it’s also a chance to integrate deeply into a foreign culture.
Try doing that when you’re graduated and working a 9 to 5! But getting admitted to a study abroad program isn’t as easy as clicking a box. Students should begin preparing as early as possible,
particularly those in majors with a long list of course requirements. If this sounds intimidating, relax. Follow these six steps and you’ll be covered! IndiaEduTech- OVERSEAS STUDY DIVISION 1. Research Programs and Talk to Faculty at Your Home University
There are more types of study abroad programs than you can possibly imagine. However, your university may not approve of every choice. That’s why it’s important to do your research and talk to your faculty advisor to determine just what will be right for you.
Some criterion to consider:

Location: Do you have your heart set on Paris, or would Prague or Buenos Aires suit your fancy? Look through a good city guide or travel photo site to get a sense of what regions attract you.
Language: Take your years of Spanish courses up to the next level with an immersive experience in a Spanish-speaking country. Or, challenge yourself when you head to a country that speaks a language you’ve never encountered. Or, keep it safe by heading to an English-speaking country. Decide just how linguistically challenged you want to be, and make a decision accordingly.
Program Type: Do you want to stay in a dorm with other American students or live with a local family? Do you want to do an internship while you’re there or focus solely on academics? Do you want your courses to relate to your major or be something totally different? Those in more intensive majors like pre-med or engineering may not have much of a choice, but with some good planning with your advisor there may be more possibilities than you might think.
University Affiliation: Most universities and majors have special relationships with approved study abroad programs, which makes things much easier in terms of getting your courses approved for credit. However, your study abroad office will have long lists of outside programs, for which you’ll need to plan out your courses well ahead of time and get approval from your major department.
When: Will you go for the classic spring of junior year slot, or is it a full year you seek? If the latter, will you stay in one place the whole time or choose two? Those with particularly hefty course loads can always take advantage of summer programs, but be warned that regular financial aid generally won’t apply.
2. Set Up a Deadlines Calendar
Once you’ve chosen your program and gotten it approved, it’s time to set up a deadline calendar, both for the application itself and as a way of pacing out work on all of the bits and pieces while still balancing a full academic load. A checklist with due dates can help keep things orderly, as can any standard calendar program with due date alerts.
3. Put Time and Effort Into Your Application Essay
Sure, you’ve got to put time and effort into your entire application, but, as with college applications, the essay is of particular importance. You’ll want to have your plans and motivations all thought out here, with a good sense of just how this fits into your larger academic and career goals. You’ll want to discuss why you want to study abroad both in general and in that specific place. While not an absolute must, the more you can show the relevance of that specific destination, the better. Someone who wants to be a Shakespearian scholar, for instance, would do well studying abroad in England, while someone interested in resolving international conflicts might do well in or around the Balkans.
Without a doubt, the professors and deans at your school, who will act as the first round of approval, will be hyper-concerned about the quality of the academics abroad, as they need to make sure any courses that appear on your transcript still reflect the rigor of your home university. In your essay, make sure to mention specific courses, why they’re perfect for your major, how they might even contribute something extra but essential to your educational experience, and what kind of workload will be expected of you. The same goes for the chosen school, and your reasons for picking that country.

4. Do the Extras
Again, just like college apps, you’re going to need recommendations (so ask early). There will also be general administrative forms, transcripts, forms for possible course selections, and health forms that may require a physical – so call your doctor and get scheduled.
5. Figure Out Financial Aid
Thanks to the good old Higher Education Act of 1965, the financial aid you receive at home may be able to be applied to your study abroad program. However, this is not necessarily true for some summer programs, and it does vary from school to school. Make sure to meet with both your study abroad and financial aid offices for a clearer picture.
6. Pay the Fees
There may be a fee of anywhere from $50 to $100 to apply, and you may have to put down a deposit once you’re admitted. Make sure to look up these exact costs ahead of time so you can start budgeting.
Once you’ve got all of these things in order, there are just two things left to do: start packing, and start dreaming!
